By the tail-end of 1990, a organisers vision of turning a non-descript country house into a nightclub in Worthing, West Sussex has come to fruition. For what he didn't realise is this nightclub was to become the south coast's hidden gem, a would-be mecca within a blossoming party scene with four ample rooms playing the whole spectrum of dance music.
The nightclub in question is called Sterns, and the parties that are causing all the fuss and commotion is "In-ter-dance". The in-ter-dance parties were the brainchild of an organiser called Adam [ a.k.a Mensa ] and from the club's opening night, Sterns had proved very popular with the locals in Sussex who were missing out on a weekly nightclub. Once the word had spread about the venue, ravers from Kent, Hampshire, Cornwall, Devon, London, Wiltshire and Essex were coming down to Sterns in their droves to see what this club was about.
The primary philosophy of Sterns was very simple; only book top name DJ's of all styles of house to play at their venue so there is something there for everybody. Although you would think that in-ter-dance only used the best DJ's available for their parties on the contary, the organisers would also give the budding amateur bedroom DJ or MC a helping hand and a chance to shine on stage by awarding them with warm-up slots at the venue.
The more the clubs reputation grew, [ with shows like the stunning live performance by the young up-starts from Braintree called "The Prodigy", which is still talked about even now ] the more the club got inundated with ravers from all over the UK and beyond who were desperate to make the pilgrimage to the hallowed venue. Due to it's formula and friendly atmosphere, doorstaff at the club regularly had to tell some of the ravers to make the other pilgrimage back home as they had to turn away as many people as they let in!. As a majority of the parties lasted only until two in the morning, it wasn't uncommon for ravers to party well after the club had closed in the car park until the break of dawn, or the local police moved them on.
During Mensa's time in charge, in-ter-dance branched out from it's home in Worthing and co-hosted two "Dance '91" parties at the Brighton Centre in Brighton, East Sussex and they also held parties in Portsmouth, Plymouth, London, Basildon, Poole and Bournemouth in Dorset and Basingstoke in Hampshire. Not intending on leaving anyone out, the team also thought of the youth of the day [ and get them hooked into the scene at the same time ] as they hosted eight under-16 "A Chance To Dance" and a round of "Workshop" parties, specifically for their age group.
